Dinner Program: WI-AIHA Team Trivia Night, 8/25/16, Sun Prairie

Topic:  WI-AIHA Team Trivia Night.   To mark the start of the new program year, the local section will be hosting the inaugural WI-AIHA team trivia night!  For this event, teams will compete for prizes (and bragging rights) by answering a wide range of IH related trivia questions.  For example, did you know that NSC estimated that 18,000-21,000 workers died from work-related injuries in 1912, compared to less than 5,000 in 2014?  Did you know that the chemical formula for ethylbenzene is C8H10?  Do you know why the symbol for lead is Pb?  Show off your knowledge and learn from others in our initial program of the year.  As this will be a learning event, all members are encouraged to contribute to the discussion that will surely follow each topic.  Contributions to the discussion can range from interesting additional facts to short case studies.  We hope this will be a low key, highly interactive evening which should be fun for all.

April 13, 2016 Program Announcement

Topic:   Isocyanates: What Industrial Hygienists need to know.

Isocyanates are compounds containing the isocyanate group (-NCO). They react with compounds containing alcohol (hydroxyl) groups to produce polyurethane polymers, which are components of polyurethane foams, thermoplastic elastomers, spandex fibers, and polyurethane paints. Health effects of isocyanate exposure include irritation of skin and mucous membranes, chest tightness, and difficult breathing.  This program will provide an overview of common uses of isocyanates, their chemical structure, and possible health implications. We will go over various analytical methodologies and address sampling concerns. And finally, we will discuss solutions to these sampling concerns.

Speaker:   John Glowacki, Chemist, Wisconsin Occupational Health Lab.

John Glowacki is an Advanced Chemist with the Wisconsin Occupational Health Lab (WOHL) at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH).  As a full-service industrial hygiene laboratory, WOHL provides a wide range of analytical services to the OSHA funded Onsite Consultation Program, as well as to many other private and corporate occupational health and safety consultants.   His duties include method development, sample analysis, and customer consultation regarding analytical methodology and sample collection.   John earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Water Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He has worked as an analytical chemist for more than 25 years, most of that time spent in the industrial hygiene field. John also serves on the AIHA Sampling and Laboratory Analysis Committee (SLAC).
