Crystalline Silica is a basic component of soil, sand, granite, and other minerals. When employees of manufacturing or foundry clients cut, drill, or grind materials containing quartz (the most common form of silica), the resulting respirable particles, when inhaled, can possibly cause serious and sometimes fatal health issues. OSHA has recently issued a final rule to limit worker exposure to respirable crystalline silica and will be phasing the rollout of two standards, one for Construction and one for General Industry and Maritime, over the next 1-2 years. Respiratory protection alone is not enough in OSHA’s eyes and our clients will need to make changes to their facilities and processes to comply with OSHA’s new standards.

These new rulings could lead to great opportunities for Stantec’s industrial hygiene team to work with clients regarding how they will meet these new standards. Leading this initiative for Stantec is Eric Pylkas, an industrial hygienist in our Mequon, WI office. Eric has been recently been awarded $15,000 in grant funds from Stantec’s Creativity & Innovation fund to support further research in this area. Eric plans to apply these funds towards case studies with select clients to develop technical literature and marketing materials that support active controls to consistently reduce airborne concentrations of respirable silica levels to below OSHA’s Permissible Exposure Limit. The resulting materials will be used to help demonstrate our solutions to clients throughout the regions and ultimately, protect members of our community’s by keeping workplaces safe.

Congratulations to Eric Pylkas on this exciting opportunity!
